The viral ChatGPT Ghiblification feature is an insult to Hayao Miyazaki who was notoriously vehemently against generative AI. Users may have not known this, but OpenAI definitely did. Which makes this a personal attack on the legacy of the late artist, and the movement to defend artist rights from AI crawler practices that commit mass copyright infringement.

You can hardly find a studio the works of which are so thoughtful, kind, and intentional as Studio Ghibli. To stripmine that for its aesthetics, to take a piece of cardboard and paint it like food and say "See, doesn't this taste just as good?" is more than missing the point, it's barbaric, dystopian. It's an insult to life itself. #OpenAI
Two thoughts:
1) a (small) part of how this is possible was Miyazaki creating a house style at Ghibli that overtook the more ambitious and chance taking Takahata films.
2) we have to do better than quoting nearly decade old (but admittedly based) quotes from an old man. I would prefer people generally promote animation rather than snipe at slop, but since the latter is gonna happen regardless we should remember you can’t shame anyone hard enough to make using AI taboo.
