I know that seagulls can be pests: the other day I saw one swoop down on a woman's lunch that she turned her back upon for a minute. The bird snatched a significant morsel and was off.

But at the same time, these birds are endearing, the way they tilt their head as if trying to understand something they hear.

And on the coast, at sunset, their cries are haunting.

Boquerón State Forest Western Puerto Rico Bosque Estatal de Boquerón, or Boquerón State Forest, is a vast natural reserve spanning over 5,000 acres across the municipalities of Cabo Rojo, Lajas, and Mayagüez in Puerto Rico. Established in 1918, it is one of the island's oldest forest reserves, dedicated to preserving diverse ecosystems, including mangrove forests, limestone cliffs, and coastal areas. ​ The forest is renowned for its rich biodiversity. It encompasses various marine biomes such as coral reefs and seagrass meadows, which are crucial habitats for species like the West Indian manatee. All four species of mangroves found in Puerto Rico thrive here, alongside plant species like the bullet tree, greenheart, and sea grape. Notably, the forest provides sanctuary to endangered species, including the black cóbana and the critically endangered bariaco. The beaches within the forest serve as vital nesting sites for leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea turtles. Three seabirds fly above in the swirling clouds and the sandy shore ripples as the ocean waves crash upon the rocky outcrops as dawn breaks upon the shore of Hutchinson Island. The early morning capture of the seashore is titled 'Current' because of the slight curl in the clouds, the wavy ripples in the sand and the waves crashing on the shore. There are currents in the air, the land, and the sea. On the history of the location: Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge was built in 1876 and is the last surviving house of refuge of 10 originally built all along Florida’s coast to aid shipwreck victims. Florida's house of refuge program started between 1876 to 1886 due to the need to prevent the high loss of life and sailing ships from hurricanes and dangerous reefs in a then largely unpopulated Florida. This historic building is on a picturesque portion of beach called the St. Lucie Rocks. Outcroppings of Anastasia limestone line the shoreline.
